IMPACT Concussion Testing

Concussion Testing

Concussion testing is now available at Pulse MD at all of our locations! After asking our community how we can best serve them, the resounding answer was “head injuries” (especially during contact sports season). So we teamed up with ImPACT (FDA approved) to evaluate our patients for concussions. Please call us, check in online, or walk in today if you or a family member needs testing!

What is an IMPACT test?

ImPACT (immediate post-concussion assessment and cognitive testing) is a computer-based assessment tool. It’s the most effective tool for comparing a person’s neurocognitive state before a concussion occurs (a baseline) versus after a head injury.

ImPACT is an objective tool to support trained healthcare providers in making sound return to activity decisions following concussions. It’s a computerized test that measures memory, attention span, visual and verbal problem solving. ImPACT has two primary uses

1) Before the onset of an activity – a baseline test is conducted to measure the athlete’s performance baseline.

2) After a head injury – a post-injury test is administered and compared to the baseline and/or normative data scores.

You do NOT necessarily need a baseline test in order to take the post-injury test.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

There is nothing you need to do to prepare – just make an appointment or walk in and we will administer the test on-site. If you had a baseline test in the past, please bring the identifier code that was sent to your email so that we can access it after you have a concussion.

How do I know if I need this test?

If you or your child participate in contact sports, we recommend coming in for an ImPACT baseline test prior to sports season. Then, in the event that you or your child gets a concussion, our concussion experts will use the baseline data as part of the post-injury exam. They may also conduct other brain function tests to better manage each athlete’s unique case. This will help us to determine the correct care plan and a timeline for return to sports.

If your child sustained a hit to the head before taking the ImPACT test, we suggest seeking care from our concussion experts.

Is this test validated?

ImPACT is a program used by the National Football League, National Hockey League, many minor league teams, and many college and high school programs across the nation.

Is this covered by insurance?

Insurance generally covers ImPACT testing. However, we recommend that you contact your insurance provider prior to your appointment to confirm your coverage. If your insurance does not cover the test, we have a self-pay option. Contact us for self-pay pricing.
